Seeking…

We just returned from a road trip. As we traveled among thousands of other fellow human beings, all going and doing, I began to muse and ponder. Maybe I was feeling like a fish out of water. I live a quiet life, tucked away on the prairie for the most part. But I began to think - “What are we all doing and thinking?? Where are we all going?? What are we all trying to accomplish??” We long for paradise but do not see or realize we can begin to create it. Our minds are tired and afraid. Our bodies are stressed and overworked. Our hearts are fractured and farmed out all over the place. Our ears hear but don’t listen. Our mouths speak empty words. We do plenty but don’t know how to be. We say we love but we judge everyone and everything, ourselves included. We give up often but don’t have a clue how to surrender. We try to make room for fear and love at the same time and somehow try to roll them into one.

We farm and kill the soil. We seek health and fill our bodies with synthetic molecules that our biological systems can’t recognize. We scheme and plan for a life based on illusions. Our conversations center around topics that leave us feeling parched and empty.

We pray for rain and worry it will get too wet. We talk about everything we need while surrounded by possessions. Our yards and properties are manicured and groomed while we go to the store to buy our chemical and additive-laden foods.

We live and work in tiny spaces and transport ourselves from place to place using mechanical creations that use fire and fuel and leave smelly waste behind.

Just how far are we living from the way we were created to? Could it be that instead of moving closer and closer to paradise, we have been leaving it further and further behind us?

Maybe we could rethink life. Go back to the simple teachings of great men and women. Not great scholars, but those who knew what true grace meant. A true connection to God, to divine love. When hopes are rooted in faith and not performance or luck or gain. Where surrender is real, a comfortable spot of “I don’t know”. Where eyes see the world through great love and compassion. Where man seeks only peace with themself and others.

I woke one morning with these words - “Be a creator, not a consumer.” Imagine the joy and happiness if the whole world was focused on creating the best experience for themselves and everyone around them. Think of how things would change if the focus would move from consuming what we “need” and want and trying to figure out how to get those things, to creating through our own beautiful dreams and imagination and conviction. What would our relationships be like if we were focused on creating beautiful “containers” for meaningful connection, and not on what we need or want. Don’t get me wrong, I do think there is a hidden danger in completely giving and giving beyond depletion. That only leads to hurt and pain. But to create a beautiful space by being “you” and softening into the experience of connecting with another person, that is inspiring.

Let us be still today and feel this breath, this whisper of paradise that is with us even now. Let us be still enough to let it rise and become our reality.

Let us be still so that we may hear the whisper of God…
